Talacanen Island is located in Taytay Bay, Northern Palawan. The land area is approx. 11 hectares. The natural beauty of Talacanen are its steep rock formations, numerous caves, white beaches and a surrounding coral reef.
The first settlers came in the 70’s, mainly fishermen from the Visayan region. Many followed, as Taytay Bay was rich in fish and other marine life. In the 80’s, Talacanen became a Sitio (small village). Beside numerous native houses, stores and fish buying stations, a church, health center and a basketball field were constructed. Life and business was good in Talacanen, despite the island has no own fresh water resources.
With the progress, also fishermen arrived which were not choosy in their methods how to catch fish. Homemade dynamite bombs and later sodium cyanide diminished marine life and corals tremendously.
The fishermen had to get their catch further on the outer islands or in the open sea. As business went from bad to worse, most people left the island and transferred to the mainland. Today, only a few families remain on the island and some deserted buildings still dot the hills and beaches.
With the construction of our small resort, we felt as well committed to do our part in helping to restore the island and the damaged reef. We planted trees and fought the ongoing erosion problems. In 2016, Talacanen Island, being a marine protected area now, became part of the Coral Triangle Initiative, an international joint project to restore coral reefs and marine life. In the meantime, Talacanen accommodates close to 20 domes planted with corals and approx. 600 giant clams.
